What really happens when DCPROMO runs on a windows 2003 server? Active directory Database gets installed on the server, and promotion of Domain controller starts at the same time
The database for active directory is NTDS.DIT
NTDS=New Technology Directory Information,
DIT= Directory information Tree
SysVol, Folder gets created.
Logs for NTDS.DIT database, makes the active directory database complete at the end
The default path for AD database is
%windir%\NTDS\NTDS.DIT
The active directory DataBase is partitioned database
In Windows 2000 active directory we will see, the DIT database partitioned on 3 partitions as below
Windows 2000 | NTDS.DIT DataBase |
Domain | |
Schema | |
Configuration |
In Windows 2000 active directory we will see, the DIT database partitioned on 4 partitions as below
Windows 2003 | NTDS.DIT DataBase |
Domain | |
Schema | |
Configuration | |
Application |
Knowing the partitions make System administrator understand better, the structure of Active directory
I recommend strongly to everyone know the structure of AD database and being able to talk about these partitions
